Lower-Income Singaporeans May Be Barred from Casinos

SINGAPORE – As reported by the Agence France-Presse: "Lower-income people may be barred from Singapore's proposed first casino if the government decides to go ahead with the project, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said.

"Lee, speaking late Sunday in his first major policy address since taking over on August 12, acknowledged 'strong concerns' about the social implications of a casino but said safeguards would be in place.

"'We will not make it easy for people to go broke and ruin their families in Singapore,' Lee said, calling for a national debate on the touchy issue as part of his call for a more open society.

"…The proposed casino would be built on Sentosa, a resort island better known for golf and family entertainment…"
