Louisiana Watches Mississippi Casino Proposals

LOUISIANA – As reported by the New Orleans Times-Picayune: "While Mississippi is moving forward on a proposal to allow the floating casinos damaged by hurricanes to rebuild on land, Louisiana is starting to think about the same thing.

"But the prospects are more uncertain in Louisiana.

"…But with gambling apparently here to stay, some say the state's vulnerability to hurricanes makes it a good time to re-consider having boats on water.

" 'Absolutely. When you look at a natural disaster that would cause the kind of destruction that's happened in Lake Charles, everyone should pause and take a look at why we do the things we do,' said Anthony Sanfilippo, president of Harrah's Central Division.

"…Rep. John Alario, D- Westwego, chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations, said several legislative colleagues have been asking the same question.

"…But the Casino Association, whose members do not include Harrah's, the largest casino operator in the state, does not plan to lobby for land-based casinos…"
