Louisiana officials warn of scams1 February 2007LOUISIANA – As reported by the Advocate: "Consumers should beware of e-mail lottery scams that are flooding the Internet, state officials said Tuesday. "'The bottom line is that if it seems too good to be true, it most likely is,' Bill Cox, vice president of security for the Louisiana Lottery said in a prepared statement. "…In some cases, consumers are getting illegal lottery prize notifications that suggest the recipient's e-mail address was selected at random. Names like Powerball and other official-sounding terms are sometimes employed. "…Consumers are losing about $120 million a year on lottery scams, according to the Federal Trade Commission…" |
