Louisiana Downs executive hopes to develop more jackpot wagers

LOUISIANA -- As reported by the Thoroughbred Times: "The racing industry has come to terms with the idea that slots players are not horseplayers, but horse racing can still learn a lot from slot machines.

"Mark Midland, vice president of racing operations for Harrah's Louisiana Downs, said that slots are successful because they are easy to understand and that racing handle has remained stagnant at about $15-billion the past few years because the big-money wagers in horse racing are too complicated.

"...Midland highlighted three aspects of a slot machine that he would like to see implemented into wagers on racing: every spin has a chance to win big, the top prize is clearly stated, and jackpots are marketed from the beginning through a seeded pot..."
