Louisiana Casinos Meet Hiring Targets

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana – As reported by the Associated Press: "Louisiana's riverboat casinos have greatly surpassed their goals for hiring women, minorities and local residents, but they've fallen behind their targets for purchasing supplies from minority- and locally-owned businesses, according to industry statistics.

"…The goals set by the casinos were voluntary, meaning the riverboats face no sanctions for missing the mark and no rewards for exceeding it. Duty told the House Labor Committee on Monday that some of the goals were based on census data and other information, but others were based purely on a best guess.

"… Rep. Ed Murray, D-New Orleans, said he'd like to see statistics on the percentages of women and minorities employed in senior management at the casinos to determine what type of jobs the majority of these groups were getting.

"Duty said six-year cumulative totals for the riverboats showed the casinos exceeded their goal to use women-owned businesses to purchase supplies like table cloth linens, glassware, food and beverages.

"…But the casinos fell just under 1 percent short on their goal to use minority-owned businesses and 2 percent short on Louisiana-based suppliers…"
