Louisiana Bill Limits Casino Workers in Public Office

LOUISIANA – As reported by the Associated Press: "Legislation drawn up to let casino employees hold local public offices in Louisiana was narrowly tailored to fit a Calcasieu Parish case by a House committee Thursday.

"Sen. Willie Mount's bill originally would have allowed non-management riverboat casino employees to run for public office if they have worked at a casino for four years.

"Amendments added by the House Criminal Justice Committee on Thursday strongly limit the bill's effects: It would only apply to a member of a parish governing authority who is elected to his first term in 2004 or to a school board member who took the oath of office for a first term in 2004.

"In effect, the amendments make the bill apply to a single Concordia Parish School Board member who works at a casino and to Kevin Guidry, a casino employee in Calcasieu who won a police jury seat last fall, but had to forego the oath of office after the state ethics board said he would violate the law by holding office and working for a riverboat casino…"
