Lotto South Jackpot Reaches $20 Million

VIRGINIA – (PRESS RELEASE) -- Don't look now, but while many people's attention was diverted by the Super Bowl and other events, the Lotto South jackpot has been quietly growing. With no jackpot winner in Saturday's Lotto South drawing, the jackpot has grown to an estimated $20 million, which is the sixth highest amount since the game began in September 2001.

Lotto South is played in Virginia, Georgia and Kentucky, with drawings at 11:00 p.m. on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Its record-high jackpot was $26 million for the January 5, 2002 drawing.

Ten Lotto South jackpots have been won by tickets purchased in Virginia since the game began. The largest Lotto South jackpot won in Virginia was $20.4 million, which was claimed by Jimmy and Cindy Tran of Roanoke in March 2002.

Although there was no jackpot winner in Saturday's drawing, 45 tickets matched five of the six numbers to each win $922; 1,849 tickets matched four numbers to each win $88; and 35,225 tickets matched three numbers to each win $5. All Lotto South prizes are pari-mutuel.

All Virginia Lottery profits, including those from Lotto South and Mega Millions tickets sold in Virginia, go to K-12 public school education in the Commonwealth. In fiscal year 2004, the Lottery raised more than $408 million for Virginia's public schools.
