Lotto Pays out £1m in Grants to Mood Watchers21 June 2005UK -- As reported by the (London) Times: "A lottery fund aimed at tapping the country's scientific and cultural potential has paid out more than £1m to professionals so they can take "sabbaticals" ranging from trips abroad to staying at home to monitor their moods. "The National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (Nesta) has become one of the most heavily subscribed lottery funds with 22 applications for each award. Applicants include hip-hop artists, psychologists and inventors. "Nesta was created in 1998 with a £200m endowment to fund innovative projects which would generate future funds. In its first five years it earned just £228 in royalties. "The 'dream time fellowships' which fund the sabbaticals seem unlikely to bring in royalties in the near future. "...Nesta defended its programme last week, saying that all awardees were monitored at monthly or quarterly "milestones" before receiving the latest segment of their grant..." |
