Lottery Scholarships Program Falls Flat

TENNESSEE – As reported by the Memphis Commercial Appeal: "Christian Brothers University's Jim Shannon looks at the lottery scholarship numbers and comes to one lackluster conclusion.

"'I think it's going to probably be a wash for us,' Shannon, dean of student financial assistance, said.

"…With the advent of lottery scholarships across the state this fall, the expectation was enrollment at Tennessee colleges and universities would increase.

"The reality shows freshman enrollment at Memphis-area schools remains basically flat, while the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, has seen an increase of more than 850 freshman since last year.

"The University of Memphis, Rhodes College, CBU and LeMoyne-Owen College all say freshman enrollment has not increased dramatically. Southwest Tennessee Community College couldn't yet gauge the impact.

"…Under the Tennessee Lottery HOPE Scholarship program, students with high grade-point averages or high scores on college entrance exams can earn $3,000-$4,000 toward a four-year school.

"About 65,000 students are eligible for the $123 million in funds. About 36,000 have been approved so far for 59 two- and four-year institutions. Another 10,000 have been granted scholarships for technology centers.

"…'At this point we don't see that the lottery is having a dramatic impact on the university,' Bill Akey, assistant vice provost of enrollment services, said…"
