Lottery Money will Help Syracuse Avoid Layoffs10 August 2004SYRACUSE -- As reported by the Post-Standard: "The Syracuse City School District likely will avoid layoffs or major changes next year by using $20 million in advance lottery payments from the state, school officials said Monday. "The school district Monday also learned it would get a 6.4 percent increase in other state money, or $10 million more over 2003-2004. "That brings the district's state aid to $167.9 million for the coming school year, not including the $20 million advance. With building and transportation aid taken out of the mix, the city is getting a 6.86 percent increase over last school year. "The extra moneymeans the school district still has a $2 million to $3 million budget shortfall for the upcoming school year, officials said. That's a far cry from the $33 million gap the district faced when it first put together its $247.65 million budget..." |
