Lottery corp. cannot police itself: ombudsman11 February 2009MANITOBA, Canada -- As reported by the CBC: "The Manitoba government is considering an overhaul of how lottery retailers are investigated amid concerns that clerks are claiming prizes at a disproportionately high rate. "The announcement follows a CBC News investigation that brought the statistics within the Western Canada Lottery Corporation (WCLC) to light this week. "When some retailers were found to be scamming the lottery system in Ontario two years ago, that provincial government decided to change things up. Until then, the lottery policed itself, but that function was subsequently made independent. "...The Manitoba government has suggested similar legislation could be coming to this province, handing the enforcement powers to the Manitoba Gaming Control Commission. That would include background checks on people who sell lottery tickets..." |
