Los Coyotes In Uphill Battle for Casino9 August 2006NORTH COUNTY, California – As reported by the North County Times: "For years, American Indian tribes with flashy Las Vegas-style casinos and deep pockets have dominated the gaming debate in the halls of California's Capitol. "The Los Coyotes Band of Cahuilla and Cupeno Indians, whose reservation home lies deep in rural northeastern San Diego County, is still trying to find its way. "…Leaders of the Los Coyotes band have been negotiating for more than three years with the state to build a casino, hoping to change its fortune. "…Though the Los Coyotes seemed to be on their way to getting a casino built with the help of city officials in Barstow, the band lost a recent battle against wealthier tribes who run casinos. Those tribes worry that desperately poor tribes like the Los Coyotes make too many concessions to the state and labor unions in their efforts to establish casinos. "…Besides opposition from other gaming tribes, the Los Coyotes band faces other hurdles. Two bills making their way through the Congress would bar tribes from building casinos outside their reservations. A bill by Resources Services Committee Chairman Richard Pombo, R-Stockton, and a bill by Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., take aim at those projects…" |
