Lorain mayor continues push for casino

LORAIN, Ohio – As reported by the Telegraph Chronicle: "Mayor Craig Foltin doesn't want to say he told you so.

"But after Presque Isle Downs racetrack and casino officially opened Wednesday in Erie, Pa., — making it the closest casino to Lorain County at a mere 131 miles from Lorain City Hall —he's thinking it.

"…Each of Ohio's neighboring states allows casino gambling except Kentucky, although Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear announced this month that he will push for a constitutional amendment to allow casinos by 2008.

"Foltin said he'll continue to push for a casino until he leaves office at the end of the year to help Lorain's struggling financial picture. In his state of the city address last week, given just two days after he announced he won't seek re-election, he mentioned his vision of a casino on the waterfront as one of the things he wanted to accomplish but didn't during his eight years in office.

"…Foltin has been fighting to bring casino gambling to Lorain since 2005 when he courted the Shawnee Indians to build a gambling house in Lorain…"
