Long Plain prepares casino bid

WINNIPEG, Manitoba -- As reported by the Winnipeg Free Press: "Brandon's rejection of an aboriginal casino is opening the door to a bid from a First Nation to locate one on the outskirts of Portage la Prairie.

"Long Plain First Nation Chief Dennis Meeches said Monday that he is taking steps to prepare a bid on the casino.

"...In January, the AMC and the provincial government announced a joint proposal to create a $35-$40 million First Nations owned and operated casino in Brandon.

"However, Brandon residents turned down a casino in a mid-March plebiscite, with 57 per cent rejecting the plan.

"The chief said Long Plain will hold its own plebiscite this month to poll reserve residents on the local bid..."
