London man wins PokerStars UKIPT Nottingham Main Event

18 May 2010

(PRESS RELEASE) -- 44-year-old Londoner Andrew Couldridge has won the PokerStars.com UKIPT Nottingham Main Event at the DTD Poker - Dusk Till Dawn Poker room. Couldridge takes home £80,000 and an entry into the £5,250 PokerStars.com EPT London event, which is the season Finale to the UK & Ireland Poker Tour.

Couldridge, who owns his own plumbing firm in North London, saw off competition from 649 other players in what was a record-breaking field for a new major poker tournament in the UK. Eight players took to the felt on the final day, with Couldridge starting fourth in chips. Level 29 was a key phase for Couldridge, when three impressive hands saw him go from around 1 million chips to over 6 million in the space of half an hour.

One of the players who vanquished during Couldridge's Level 29 dominance was overnight chip leader Owen Robinson who finished in fourth place, winning £21,400. That key pot gave Couldridge a commanding chip lead, which he never relinquished. Despite heads up opponent Oliver Schaffmann doing his best to reduce his chip deficit by eliminating third-place Andros Spyrou, he went into the heads up with a 2-1 chip deficit.

Shaffmann won the first two hands of the heads up, but the third and final hand saw Couldridge's Qs-4s better Schaffmann's pocket nines when he hit a queen on the turn and another on the river. Couldridge had a lot of support from the rails and their cheers reverberated around the poker room as they watched their champion receive his trophy.

Couldridge said of the win, "It's been a very tiring three days of ups and downs. This was my first UKIPT event; it's a very good tour with lots of play and [it] was a very enjoyable tournament." Asked what he would be doing with his winnings, Couldridge replied that he would use some of it to follow his football team, Spurs, around Europe next season to watch their Champions League performances.

Tour Host Nick Wealthall commented, "We arrived at Dusk Till Dawn with great expectations that the event somehow managed to exceed. The card room must be one of the best places in Europe to play poker - the number of players and the level of play lived up to the setting. We've also broken our duck and finally have our first UK winner, so Andrew has made a bit of history for himself and for UKIPT."

The next stop in the first Season of UKIPT is at the Gleneagles Hotel in Killarney, which takes place between June 24-27. The €1000+100 has a €250,000 guarantee and players can qualify for as little as €10 or 500FPPs from Monday 17th on PokerStars.com. More information can be found on www.ukipt.com.
