Locals respond to Casino Pauma expansion

PAUMA VALLEY, California -- As reported by the North County Times: "More than 60 Pauma Valley residents attended a hearing Tuesday night on the planned expansion of Casino Pauma to share their concerns with tribal officials.

"Many of the residents said they worry about the increased traffic, crime, water usage and other changes that would be likely to occur in the rural area because of the project.

"The Pauma Band of Mission Indians, which owns the casino, recently released an environmental report on the project that said the facility would increase traffic on Highway 76, a rural road leading to the reservation from Interstate 15.

"...Chris Devers, chairman of the Pauma band, told the residents that his tribe would take their comments into consideration through the environmental review process. He said after the meeting some of the apparent frustrations may have been because of the residents' lack of familiarity with the report.

"...Last year, the Pauma tribe announced it would build a $300 million casino and hotel with the help of its partners, the Mashantucket Pequots' Foxwoods Development Co..."
