Local Officials Responsible for Colorado Casino Tax Share

COLORADO – As reported by the Pueblo Chieftain: "City and county elected leaders will be responsible for giving other taxing entities their share of money from the Indian-owned casino proposed for Pueblo.

"The information came during a presentation about the casino project from Steve Hillard, president of Council Tree Communications. The company is developing the project with the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes of Oklahoma.

"Hillard said the city and county will each be given 5 percent of the gross revenue from the casino, 'off the top, ' which could amount to as much as $5 million a year for each government.

"…It would be up to the city and county to pass the money to the taxing districts that would otherwise collect some kind of tax from the casino's land, he said. The developer and tribes believed that was the best approach because City Council and the Board of County Commissioners would know better what entities should get how much money…"
