Local fiddler to perform at Dog Iron Saloon14 July 2016(PRESS RELEASE) -- When you hear the classic bluegrass music and country lyrics oozing through the air at a Mountain Tyme show, you don't expect it to come from a 25-year-old. But Daniel Collier, the fiddle player and lead singer of the group, has been doing it since he was 9 years old. On July 20, Collier and his bluegrass group, Mountain Tyme, will perform a free show at the Dog Iron Saloon inside Cherokee Casino - Will Rogers Downs. Collier, a Cherokee Nation citizen originally from Claremore, now lives in Broken Arrow and says he caught the bluegrass bug at a young age. He is known for calling everyone "ma'am" and "sir" with a charming southern drawl, and has five sisters and one brother who all play music. "We used to have a family band. We'd play at lots of churches, funeral homes, family functions, things like that," said Collier. His great-grandfather played the fiddle; his dad, James Collier, plays the guitar; and his mother, Charlene, plays the base fiddle. Collier plays his great-grandfather's fiddle at shows. "It's a copy of a Stradivarius made in the 1800s. It's very special to me," said Collier. Collier met his bandmates during jam sessions at various bluegrass festivals. In addition to festivals and general concert halls, they've performed at places such as St. Francis Children's Hospital and the Claremore Veterans Center over the past nine years. He often gets requests for songs like "Rocky Top," "Red River Valley" and "Uncle Pen." "It's all acoustic music and generally caters to a specific audience. When you play a song someone hasn't heard in years, it brings memories and sometimes tears for them," said Collier. "It's a cool experience.
