Lincoln Park Deal Approved by Senate27 May 2005PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island – As reported by the Providence Journal: "Wowed by eleventh-hour promises of hundreds of millions of dollars in tax relief for the low-income, the elderly, the disabled and car owners, the Senate yesterday overwhelmingly approved legislation concerning the sale of the Lincoln Park greyhound track and slot hall to new owners with big expansion plans. "In the end, only one senator voted against the legislation locking in the new owners' tax rate for 18 years and potentially locking out competitors, including the proposed Harrah's-Narragansett Indian casino. "The lone dissenter, Sen. Marc Cote, D-Woonsocket, said he believes, and voters believe, they have the power to decide the fate of any gambling expansion of this magnitude. "…But even traditional opponents of gambling backed the deal that was forged, in private, by Senate President Joseph A. Montalbano, a Democrat, and Governor Carcieri, a Republican, and that surfaced, in full, for the first time on Tuesday…" |
