Liberals Calling for Cuts to Number of VLTs in Saskatchewan

SASKATOON, Canada -- As reported by the Regina Leader-Post: "The provincial Liberals want significant cuts to the number of video lottery terminals (VLTs), and possibly to other gaming machines located in casinos as well, staking out a position sharply different than those of the two main provincial parties.

"A resolution pledging the party to reduce the number of VLTs was passed at the weekend convention of the Saskatchewan Liberal Association, which includes both the federal and provincial wings of the party.

"Liberal Leader David Karwacki said the details of the party's position will be determined by himself and the party's platform committee before the next election.

"...Chopping VLT numbers is a loaded proposition in itself because of its potential impact on rural hoteliers and provincial revenue, but Karwacki acknowledged targeting slot machines is even more contentious because of its potential impact on the province's four First Nation casinos.

"...A study published in the Canadian Journal of Psychiatry earlier this year said Saskatchewan and Manitoba have the largest per capita numbers of VLTs and casinos in Canada along with the highest rates of problem gambling..."
