Leader: California Tribes Must United15 January 2004PALM SPRINGS, California – As reported by the Palm Springs Desert Sun: "California tribes must form a united front to undo the damage caused by Gov. Schwarzenegger's campaign ads and to fend off attempts to pit tribes against one another, the leader of the state's largest tribal organization said Wednesday. "'As we face difficult challenges, it cannot be overstated enough to say, it is critical to our very existence as sovereign tribal nations and as a people, that we recapture this important unity,' said Anthony Miranda, chairman of the California Nations Indian Gaming Association, recalling the unity that helped tribes win voter approval to run Vegas-style casinos in 1998 and 2000. "…Indian leaders said Schwarzenegger could try to pit tribes against one another during discussions. If a tribe in a competitive market agrees to a hefty revenue-sharing arrangement in exchange for a large allotment of slot machines, it could put other tribes at an economic disadvantage, some leaders fear.
