Lawyer: Gambling Addiction Drove Man to Steal Millions

SOUTH AUSTRALIA – As reported by the Australia News Interactive: "A gambler could not be held responsible for stealing $22 million from his boss because his gambling was so uncontrollable it constituted a mental illness, a court was told today.

"The South Australian Supreme Court was today asked to consider whether Dennis Craig Telford's gambling made him mentally incompetent of committing 63 offences.

"Telford has pleaded not guilty to 32 charges of fraudulently appropriating property, 11 of forgery and 20 of falsification of accounts.

"The charges relate to about $22m (US$15.3 million) stolen from a company owned by Mt Gambier trucking magnate Alan Scott over a two-year period, while Telford worked as the company secretary.

"…Telford's lawyer, Kevin Borick, QC, today urged Justice John Perry to find his client's pathological gambling had made him unable to control his behaviour…"
