Lawsuit Pending Involving Former Casino Owner in Edwards Case22 November 2004BATON ROUGE, Louisiana -- As reported by the Associated Press: "If the former owner of the Treasure Chest Casino has to pay Louisiana millions of dollars he made in a riverboat licensing scheme involving former Gov. Edwin Edwards, he wants the U.S. government to foot the bill. "Robert Guidry, who is being sued by the attorney general's office in state court, has filed a petition asking that the government pay any monetary damages a judge may order. The matter is pending in Baton Rouge federal court. Government lawyers have until Dec. 13 to respond. "...Guidry agreed in October 1998 to plead guilty to conspiracy in the riverboat licensing extortion scheme. In exchange for his testimony against Edwards and others involved, prosecutors agreed to limit his fine, restitution and forfeiture to $3.5 million. They also sought full immunity from the state of Louisiana "But in October 1999, then-Attorney General Richard Ieyoub filed a lawsuit against Guidry, seeking restitution for the profits and "economic advantages" he earned from the riverboat license he got..." |
