Lawsuit filed against casino construction

CALIFORNIA – As reported by the Fresno Bee: "A lawsuit seeking to stop construction of additional facilities at Chukchansi Gold Resort and Casino was filed Tuesday in Madera County Superior Court.

"The county said in a news release that an emergency hearing seeking an immediate temporary restraining order was scheduled for today in Superior Court.

"The county contends the Picayune Rancheria of the Chukchansi Indians' construction at the casino site near Coarsegold is unlawful because it's on nontrust land for which the tribe needs to obtain county permits.

",,,The county said its lawsuit seeks preliminary and permanent injunctions from the court halting the tribe's alleged illegal activity. The lawsuit contends the tribe has not moved the nontrust land into federal trust status, which would allow construction without county approval…"
