Last Chance for Barstow Casino

SACRAMENTO, California – As reported by the San Bernardino Sun: "With the legislative session ending today, the Los Coyotes tribe faces its last chance this year to win approval for a proposed casino in Barstow.

"Tribal members have been fasting on the state Capitol lawn for more than two weeks now, as they try to convince legislators to move their proposed compact forward. But, opposed by wealthier tribes and overshadowed by larger gaming deals, they have had trouble even getting meetings with key players.

"Right now, members said, their best hope is to join into a larger deal being negotiated with multiple tribes in a universal settlement.

"…The proposed compact, contained in Senate Bill 168, calls for the north San Diego County-based Los Coyotes and the Humboldt County-based Big Lagoon tribes to build two separate casinos on adjacent properties in Barstow.

"The proposal was shot down in the Assembly Governmental Organization Committee in June, but was granted reconsideration, meaning it could be revived if there is sufficient political will. The state Legislature's session ends today, meaning any bills not passed by tonight are dead…"
