Las Vegas Won't Lend Name to Internet Gambling7 March 2002LAS VEGAS – As reported by the Associated Press: “…For the second time in 16 months, the Las Vegas City Council voted Wednesday to back off the issue after City Manager Virginia Valentine highlighted the risks of licensing and regulating a gambling-oriented Web site. ”Mayor Oscar Goodman said he'd like to revive the idea if the federal and state governments determine Internet gambling is legal. ”However, Goodman said he would only agree to selling the city name and seal to an Internet site if it involved a `bricks and mortar’ casino. ”…Las Vegas officials have given wildly fluctuating estimates - ranging from $90 million to less than $1 million - of how much licensing the Las Vegas name to an Internet concern could generate for city. ”…Goodman said he won't give up looking for new sources of revenue for the city, including the possibility of backing a statewide lottery to raise money to serve the mentally ill.” |
