Las Vegas Visitor Volume Exceeds Expectations

LAS VEGAS, Nevada— (Press Release) -- July 25,2000 -- Las Vegas now expects approximately 36.7 million visitors for the year 2000, according to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA). An original projection of 35.5 million was revised after the first months of 2000 logged healthier than expected numbers of visitors.

Through May, a total of 14.9 million people visited Las Vegas, an 8.3 percent increase over the 13.7 million visitors logged for the first five months of 1999. Room inventory has grown 5.3 percent over 1999, to 121,066 rooms citywide. The new Aladdin will add more than 2,600 rooms when it opens mid-August.

``With Las Vegas' room inventory growing by thousands of rooms each year, it is noteworthy that the average occupancy rate has been logged at 90 percent for the first five months of 2000,'' said Rossi Ralenkotter, vice president of marketing for the LVCVA.

Gross gaming revenue also was up, to $3.3 billion through May, an increase of 10.7 percent over the same period in 1999. For the month of May, gross gaming revenue totaled $635 million, a 6 percent increase over May 1999.

Passenger traffic through McCarran International Airport was up 9.5 percent through May, for a total of 15 million passengers.

Southern California automobile traffic through the Yermo Inspection Station was up 8.7 percent for the first five months of 1999, to 2.3 million vehicles. For the month of May, a decrease of 6 percent was recorded as compared to May 1999.

Laughlin, Nevada, located 90 miles southwest of Las Vegas, recorded nearly 2 million visitors through May, an increase of 2.2 percent when compared to the same time period in 1999.

Gross gaming revenue was up 8.5 percent, to $253.4 million through May.
