Las Vegas Sands Makes Bid for UK Casino

UNITED KINGDOM – As reported by the icNewcastle: "American casino bosses yesterday launched a high-stakes bid to build a £100m gaming and entertainment complex at Sunderland's Stadium.

"The bid, the first planning application in the North-East for one of eight new Las Vegas-style casinos likely to be permitted by the Government, was lodged yesterday.

"…But the plan could herald the start of an off-the-pitch rivalry with the club's old adversary, Newcastle United, itself in talks with another American operator over a possible casino at St James's Park.

"The Government's proposal for 40 new super-casinos was watered down to just eight after concern from backbench MPs, and the North-East is unlikely to get more than one.

"Sunderland's casino proposal would involve leasing the land used for a car park at the football ground to operator Las Vegas Sands Inc.

"…The company has also put forward plans to develop casinos at Sheffield United's Bramall Lane ground, and Ibrox, home of Glasgow Rangers. They are among 52 plans believed to have been lodged across the UK…"
