Las Vegas Sands gets shot at Kansas casino

KANSAS -- As reported by the Kansas City Star: "The Las Vegas Sands Corp. convinced Edwardsville officials that it deserved a shot at managing a state-owned casino.

"The Edwardsville City Council voted unanimously Monday night to approve Sands' planning and zoning application for a $777 million casino at 110th Street and Interstate 70, just south of Kansas Speedway. It followed that action with another unanimous vote to endorse the Sands proposal for the state's consideration.

"Sands initially sought to build a casino in Kansas City, Kan., at Leavenworth Road and Interstate 435. When Wyandotte County's Unified Government rejected that idea in December, a proposal was submitted to the Kansas Lottery Commission.

"The commission ruled that Sands and others could retroactively seek a host city's approval and not violate a requirement that all proposals receive a local endorsement.

"The casino selection process is slated to end in mid-September, when the Kansas Lottery Gaming Facility Review Board makes its final decision. In addition to the Sands, four Wyandotte County casino proposals have advanced to the state — three in Kansas City, Kan., and another one in Edwardsville..."
