Las Vegas Resorts Raise Room Rates to Meet Increased Power Costs12 April 2001LAS VEGAS, Nevada –April 12, 2001 –As reported by the Associated Press: “ Two Las Vegas resorts have added a surcharge to room rates to meet rising power costs in a city that always leaves the lights on. ”Harrah's International Inc. added a $3-per-room, per-night charge at Harrah's Las Vegas with 2,600 rooms on the Strip and at the Rio hotel-casino with 2,550 suites just west of the Strip. ”…A sampling of other casino operators shows most plan to rely on conservation measures and forgo raising rates. ”…`Even with our best efforts in conservation, we're not able to keep up with the rate increases,’ said Alan Feldman, spokesman for MGM Mirage Inc., the largest owner of hotel-casinos in Las Vegas. `At this point, we haven't considered a surcharge.’ ”…The electricity used by a megaresort with about 3,000 rooms is the about same amount it would take to power 9,000 three-bedroom homes, according to Nevada Power. ”Harrah's and the Rio are notifying its customers of the increase on their hotel bills. ”…Other gambling companies like MGM Mirage Inc. and Mandalay Resort Group have turned to conservation measures to beat the rising power costs including converting room and hallway lights to energy efficient bulbs. ”…Glenn Schaeffer, Mandalay president and chief financial officer, is predicting his company - which owns and operates Mandalay Bay, the Luxor and Circus Circus, among others - could see its electricity and natural gas costs rise as much as 30 percent over the next year…” |
