Las Vegas Numbers Are Up

The largest percentage increase tracked in the monthly LVCVA report was in vehicle traffic through the Yermo Inspection Station, which measures Southern California automobile traffic. Almost 500,000 vehicles were logged at the station, a 19.3 percent increase when compared to January 1999. The number of visitors to Las Vegas in January jumped 7.2 percent, to 2,795,788, compared to January 1999.

Clark County's gross gaming revenue was up 7.5 percent over January 1999, to $721 million. Average citywide hotel and motel occupancy in January stood at 82.6 percent, a 1.1 percent decrease compared to January 1999. For other major cities in the United States, average hotel and motel occupancy levels are approximately 65 percent.

Convention attendance in January was 436,618, up 12.4 percent from January 1999. There were 271 conventions held during January, compared to 302 conventions held for the same month last year.

"The non-gaming economic impact of the conventions held in January was almost $476 million," said Rossi Ralenkotter, vice president of marketing for the LVCVA. "With trade show delegates and convention attendees typically spending more than leisure travelers, it is easy to extrapolate the importance of the business visitor and the convention industry to the health of Clark County's economy."

Visitor volume to Laughlin, Nevada, located 90 miles southeast of Las Vegas on the Colorado River, was down 2.7 percent in January, tracking 2,673,673 visitors for the month. The occupancy level for January stood at 82.8 percent, a 2.4 percent decrease over January 1999.

Laughlin's convention attendance was up 8.8 percent over January 1999, to 8,459 delegates for the month. Gross gaming revenue was up in January, to $49.7 million, a 2.9 percent increase over January 1999. Airline passenger traffic through McCarran International Airport in November was up 6.8 percent in January, to 2.7 million passengers.
