Las Vegas Leads the U.S. in Hotel Rooms Rated Four Diamond by the AAA

1 February 2000

Las Vegas achieved a milestone today that few would have thought possible a few years ago - it became the U.S. city with the most number of hotel rooms in properties given Four Diamond status by the American Automobile Association.

The latest resort to win the award is Treasure Island. Its 2,665 rooms give Las Vegas 17,205 rooms rated Four Diamond. Chicago has 15,738 rooms with that AAA rating.

Las Vegas has long led the country in total hotel room count. But it's only in recent years that many of its large resorts have been considered luxurious enough to merit Four Diamonds.

To get that award, AAA reviewers look at more than 30 criteria, and require amenities such as professionally planned and manicured landscaping, public areas that are highlighted by marble or hardwood floors and comfortable conversational areas within the private rooms.

Treasure Island is the seventh hotel in Las Vegas to get Four Diamonds. Three other properties owned by Mirage Resorts - Bellagio, Mirage and Golden Nugget - have the ranking, along with the Desert Inn, Caesars Palace and the Las Vegas Hilton.

Mirage Resorts said it spent $65 million over the last two years to renovate Treasure Island. It opened in 1993.
