Las Vegas Leads Fight Against Offshore Gambling Sites

“There are more than 2,000 offshore gambling sites accepting bets from individuals in the United States. The sites are attempting to circumvent U.S. law by locating themselves offshore and out of our jurisdictional reach.

“Studies have predicted that Internet gambling in Australia, the Caribbean and other offshore markets will reach more than $4 billion in the next year, and Nevada wants to stop that flow of funds going elsewhere.

“The Nevada Gaming Control Board has asked the state attorney general's office to consider prosecuting offshore Internet casinos that place ads targeting bettors in Nevada.

“…The Internet has also taken a bite out of the veteran gamblers in Vegas. They used to be able to get the best odds at the Stardust. Now, Internet companies are starting to set their own odds -- taking a chunk of the business out of Nevada and into the books in places like Costa Rica.

“Many Internet sites, however, are shaky at best. Several have opened up shop in another country, taken bets online, then quickly folded -- leaving customers out of thousands of dollars they were owed…”
