Lakes Entertainment Weighs Cost of Appeal23 June 2004MASSACHUSETTS – As reported by the Boston Herald: "Midwest gambling powerhouse that spent millions backing a Central Massachusetts American Indian group's recently spurned effort to win official tribal recognition is weighing whether to bankroll a potentially costly appeal. "A marketing executive working with the Sutton-based tribe insisted yesterday that Lakes Entertainment continues to finance Nipmuc Nation, for which the Minneapolis company had hoped to build a New England casino. "But Guy Conrad, head of Farsight Marketing, said the Nipmuc leaders plan to sit down with Lakes executives to discuss what appeals to pursue - and whether Lakes will pay for any of them. "Last week, the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs rejected the Nipmuc group's petition for tribal recognition, a move that may doom hopes by the Indian group and its backers to open a casino. "…At this point, Lakes has made no commitments, one way or another, about financing an appeal, Conrad acknowledged…" |
