Korean Organized Crime Busted for Illegal Gambling

8 April 2002

SEOUL, South Korea – As reported by the Korea Herald: "The Seoul District Public Prosecutor's Office said yesterday it arrested 33 members of organized crime families for operating video game arcades with illegal gambling machines in Seoul.

"…One of those arrested, a 41-year-old man identified only by his surname Yun, is suspected of modifying game machines in his three arcades illegally and raking in revenues of 15 million won ($11,274) daily.

"A 51-year-old police officer, identified by his family name, Park, was arrested for accepting 8 million won (US$6,023) from an arcade operator in return for favors, the prosecution office said.

"…The 19 arcades are estimated to post a combined annual profit of around 36 billion won (US$27.1 million) on a total turnover of 140 billion won (US$105.4 million), the office said, adding that a considerable amount of the money might have flowed into organized crime rings."
