Korean Gov't Blocks Efforts for Another Casino for Korean Nationals

16 November 2000

SEOUL, Korea – As reported by the Korea Herald: "The Ministry of Culture and Tourism said yesterday that it would not permit another casino for Korean citizens after the one that opened for business in late October.

"`We are not considering licensing another casino for Korean nationals for fear of encouraging gambling,' a ministry spokesman said.

"…`The casino in Kangwon Province has only been open for about 20 days but has already triggered a lot of problems,' he said.

"…The ministry is in talks with Kangwon Land Corp., the owner of the casino, on lowering the betting limits and restricting business hours, the spokesman said.

"…Central and provincial governments licensed the controversial casino with the intent of developing mining towns devastated by the switch in fuel sources from coal to oil and gas."
