Kentucky Tracks Open to Casino Compromise

KENTUCKY – As reported by the Thoroughbred Times: "Officials with Kentucky's racetracks have told state Representative Larry Clark (D-Louisville), speaker pro tem, that they would be open to casinos at non-racetrack sites as long as the tracks can operate casinos as well. The new position indicates the tracks view the compromise as possibly the only way they can acquire expanded gaming.

"'They have agreed to the concept,' Clark told the Lexington Herald-Leader after a meeting with racetrack officials, including Turfway Park President Bob Elliston.

"…Kentucky's tracks have lobbied for expanded gaming to help them compete with neighboring states that allow tracks to offer expanded gaming, such as West Virginia, and riverboats on Kentucky's border (in Illinois, Indiana, and Missouri), but the tracks have previously been opposed to any legislation that would allow independent sites to offer gaming as well.

"The tracks would like to move the issue along because the General Assembly already is halfway through its session, but Clark said he has not reached an agreement with tracks on the number of casinos or how to divide revenue…"
