Kentucky legislator pushes for expanded gambling8 January 2009FRANKFORT, Kentucky -- As reported by the Lexington Herald-Leader: "Using his new bully pulpit as speaker of the House, Greg Stumbo immediately began pushing anew for expanded gambling at Kentucky racetracks. "Stumbo, D-Prestonsburg, said Wednesday during his first day as the top leader in the House that he will file a bill this week that would allow video slot machines year-round at tracks in hopes of raising $700 million a year for the state's coffers. "Senate President David Williams, R-Burkesville, said he opposes any expansion of gambling in the state and sees no sentiment for doing so in the Senate. "He doubts that the proposal will be passed by the Democratic-controlled House and predicted that former House Speaker Jody Richards, who for years opposed expansion of gambling but changed his mind in an unsuccessful bid for governor in 2007, 'will return to his Church of Christ roots now' and oppose the measure. "Williams said he opposes expanded gambling because it creates too many social ills and has hurt candidates in Kentucky elections. He contends that the state doesn't have the population to support more gambling..." |
