Kentucky Lawmakers Support Casino Vote1 March 2004KENTUCKY – As reported by the (Kentucky) Gleaner: "Local lawmakers, including a Henderson senator, expressed general support Saturday for bills filed Friday that would allow Kentuckians to vote on whether casinos should be allowed in the state. "If voters approve a constitutional amendment, it would pave the way for a plan worked out with Kentucky's horse racing industry that calls for four land-based casinos -- including one in Owensboro -- and five casinos at horse racing tracks in Louisville, northern Kentucky, Lexington, Franklin and Prestonsburg. "…The casinos would generate $1.25 billion annually in total receipts within five years, with the state getting $437.5 million a year, or 35 percent of the take, in taxes, a proponent of the plan said Thursday. "A proposal would funnel those proceeds to education (40 percent), Medicaid (20 percent), local governments (10 percent) and other areas…" |
