Kentucky Horse Lobby Wants Expanded Gambling

KENTUCKY – As reported by the Kentucky Courier-Journal: "The Kentucky Equine Education Project has not taken a stance on expanded gambling legislation, but the group's chairman said yesterday that the state must act to keep gambling dollars in Kentucky.

"'We can't stick our heads in the sand. We can't allow the money that is now going to other states from Kentucky to continue to go and not do anything about it,' project Chairman and former Kentucky Gov. Brereton Jones said at a lunch sponsored by the University of Louisville's equine industry program.

"While the project, or KEEP, has stayed neutral on the contentious gambling issue, Jones' comments suggest the increasingly powerful organization may be poised to put gambling on its legislative agenda for the 2006 session. KEEP was founded last year and has more than 6,200 members in Kentucky representing all horse breeds. Last winter, KEEP lobbied for incentives in Gov. Ernie Fletcher's tax plan, which he signed into law in March…"
