Kentucky Church Group Fights Casino Bill

KENTUCKY – As reported by the Kentucky Courier-Journal: "Kentucky's largest faith-based organization once again is mobilizing to battle efforts to legalize casino gambling in the state.

"In an e-mail sent statewide, the Lexington-based Kentucky Council of Churches urges its members to contact legislators and ask them oppose any gambling-related legislation.

"…'With less than 25 days to enact a budget, and facing a fiscal shortfall of close to a billion dollars, there are those in Kentucky governmental circles who are advocating expanded gambling as the answer to fill the state's treasury and offset the tax cuts of the past 10 years,' the Rev. Nancy Jo Kemper, executive director of the council, said in the e-mail.

"The council has battled gambling legislation before. The impact of the group's opposition is impossible to gauge, but none of the casino bills have made it out of committee.

"With a claimed membership of 800,000, the council's concerns typically are heeded in Frankfort.

"…The bills filed in Frankfort would allow gambling at racetracks, casinos and gambling halls…"
