Kentucky Casino Bill Goes to House

FRANKFORT, Kentucky – As reported by the Lexington Herald: "Legislation to legalize casino gambling in Kentucky is likely to go to the House next week.

"After an informational hearing yesterday, Rep. Denver Butler, D-Louisville, said gambling will come up for a vote Wednesday in the House Licensing & Occupations Committee.

"The sponsor of the bills, Rep. Larry Clark, D-Louisville, indicated that he expects them to pass.

"…The Rev. Nancy Jo Kemper, executive director of the Kentucky Council of Churches, which is a member of Citizens Against Gambling Expansion, said yesterday she does not think the bill will pass the General Assembly, in part because of possible disagreements within the horse industry.

"…Clark has proposed a constitutional amendment to allow casino gambling at nine sites around the state -- five at racetracks and four elsewhere. The state estimates the casinos could generate $1.25 billion a year in revenue when mature, with the state getting 35 percent of that…"
