Kentucky Casino Backers Hopeful For 2006

FORT MITCHELL, Kentucky – As reported by the Cincinnati Kentucky: "Northern Kentucky developer and casino gambling advocate Jerry Carroll does not expect the General Assembly to discuss legislation on gambling in 2005.

"But Carroll, who owns Kentucky Speedway and formerly owned the Turfway Park thoroughbred track in Florence, does believe the legislature will vote on legalizing casino gambling in 2006.

"Many lawmakers have indicated that gambling will be a topic in 2006, and most believe it will be end up as a proposed constitutional amendment. If the legislature votes in favor of the amendment, the question of legalized casino gambling then would go before the state's voters in November 2006.

"…Carroll applauds the businesslike approach he says Gov. Ernie Fletcher is taking to the issue.

"'I'm encouraged by what is happening,' said Carroll, who has been pushing for legalized casino gambling since the early 1990s.

"'Governor Fletcher and (Lieutenant Governor) Steve Pence are doing the right thing by looking at gambling not as a way to just help the thoroughbred racing industry, but as an economic development and tourism issue. That's the way to get it through the legislature, and that's the way to win the support of the people,' he said.

"…Carroll expressed interest in developing a casino complex that would include hotels, restaurants, entertainment venues, clubs and more along the Ohio River or possibly along Interstate 75 in Northern Kentucky. Carroll and a group of investors control the Drawbridge Inn, which sits on 20 acres just off the interstate in Fort Mitchell…"
