Kentucky candidates debate expanded gambling28 August 2007KENTUCKY -- As reported by the Charleston Daily Mail: "Whether to allow casino-style gambling at racetracks has been a perennial issue in Kentucky. "Proponents have yet to muster enough support to make a serious push in the General Assembly, but now they have an influential ally in Democratic gubernatorial candidate Steve Beshear. "Beshear has vowed in his campaign to ask lawmakers to authorize a statewide referendum on whether casino gambling can be offered at racetracks and -- of note to West Virginians -- at up to four locations along the state's borders. "...In the Kentucky campaign, Beshear and Gov. Ernie Fletcher, the Republican incumbent, are both putting forth arguments that should sound familiar to West Virginians. "...Beshear estimates the Bluegrass State would bring in about $500 million a year from casinos for education and health care.
