Kentucky candidate supports expanded gambling

FRANKFORT, Kentucky – As reported by the Louisville Courier-Journal: "Democratic gubernatorial candidate Steve Beshear said Tuesday he will push for a state constitutional amendment in 2008 that would allow expanded gambling in Kentucky.

"'Allowing expanded gaming in Kentucky will give us the additional revenue needed for Kentucky to make a giant leap forward and significantly improve the lives of all Kentucky citizens,' he said during a news conference at the Capital Plaza Hotel.

"Beshear, a former lieutenant governor, said he would work with the House and Senate next year to place constitutional amendment on the ballot in November 2008.

"He said he would favor an amendment that would allow gambling at racetracks and a limited number of freestanding locations. He said he opposes putting slot machines in bars, restaurants and convenience stores.

"…Republican Gov. Ernie Fletcher, who is running for re-election, opposes casinos, although he has said he would not try to block a statewide referendum on allowing them…"
