Keeping problem gamblers in check

1 October 2008

SINGAPORE -- As reported by Today: "Even before Singapore's first casino opens at the end of next year, applications to bar people from entering the gaming establishment may be received as early as January.

"The National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) said yesterday it hopes to receive applications for casino exclusions from January.

"It expects to start issuing some 29,000 exclusion orders next year. This figure is the baseline of those who will be barred under third-party exclusions, which include all undischarged bankrupts and those on public assistance, said Mr Lim Hock San, the chairman of NCPG.

"Families may apply to exclude members with a gambling problem and individuals can apply voluntarily for self-exclusion.

"The NCPG will appoint a panel of assessors to decide on the applications for family exclusions.

"...Frontline staff will be taught how to spot signs of problem gambling and how to refer potential problem gamblers for help..."
