Kansas Tribe Considers Building Casino4 October 2004KANSAS – As reported by the Wichita Business Journal: "The chairman of the State Tribal Affairs Committee says the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska is considering building a casino in Sedgwick County, and Wichita's former mayor is part of the effort. "Rep. William Mason, R-El Dorado, says former mayor Bob Knight and Gordon Schultz asked for a meeting on behalf of the tribe to discuss the idea. Mason characterized the meeting as a preliminary discussion. "During that meeting, Mason says, he got the impression that the Iowa tribe's plan relies on becoming part of the negotiations between the state and the Kickapoo and Sac and Fox tribes to open an Indian casino in Wyandotte County. "…Matt All, chief counsel for Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, says he's heard that the Iowa tribe might be interested in building a casino. "…Stand Up for Kansas, an anti-gambling group, got wind of the meeting between Mason, Knight and Schultz and is ready to fight any casino plan for Sedgwick County…" |
