Kansas Tribal Casino Deals Near End

KANSAS CITY, Kansas — Lawrence Journal-World: "Negotiations between the state and two Kansas tribes hoping to open a large casino close to Kansas Speedway have neared completion. Meanwhile, an Oklahoma-based tribe is continuing its efforts to reopen a smaller casino in the same county.

"Matt All, chief counsel to Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, said Thursday that the hotel and casino complex in Wyandotte County proposed by the Kickapoo and Sac and Fox tribes would provide $40 million to $50 million a year in revenue to the state.

"The state has been meeting daily with Kickapoo and Sac and Fox representatives, whose tribes already operate separate casinos in northeast Kansas. The state is negotiating for both a cut of profits from the new casino and a small portion of profits from the tribes' existing casinos.

"…Before the Kickapoo and Sac and Fox can open their casino, the U.S. secretary of the interior must put the site's land in trust for them. Also, legislators must approve the compact negotiated with the Governor's Office…"
