Kansas Town Debates Over Casino

GALENA, Kansas – As reported by the Joplin Globe: "While some in Galena say the town could hit the jackpot if a state-run casino were developed here, others are opposed to the idea on moral grounds.

"They were reacting to last week's release of study findings that Galena, because of its proximity to more than a million people within 75 miles, would be a good spot for a state-run resort casino.

"…Under the estimates, a Galena casino could result in gross revenues of $240.8 million a year. The findings said a Kansas City casino could make $235.3 million and a Wichita casino could bring in $193.1 million annually.

"The study was conducted for the Governor's Gaming Committee, formed by Gov. Kathleen Sebelius.

"…'If they need to, they can put it in my back yard,' said Jamie Bell, Galena's city manager.

"…'Gambling is legal,' Bell said. 'Gambling is here whether they like it or not.'

"…Rodney Castleberry, pastor of the First Baptist Church, is among those opposed to the idea of a casino in town.

"'It's very disturbing that they would bring casinos into this area,' Castleberry said…"
