Kansas Legislator Wants Casino Vote

2 August 2005

KANSAS – As reported by the Wichita Business Journal: "A Wichita legislator will ask Sedgwick County Commissioners Wednesday to let voters decide in November whether they want casinos in the county.

"Rep. Nile Dillmore, D-Wichita, says he will ask the commission during its regular 9 a.m. meeting at the courthouse to call a special non-binding referendum on casino gambling.

"The request is unlikely to prompt any commission action Wednesday, says Dave Unruh, county commission chairman -- primarily because it's already being considered by the commission.

"…Legislative efforts to pass an expanded gaming bill failed earlier this year. Gov. Kathleen Sebelius has said she wants proof of broad-based community support -- including citizens, the county commission and the Wichita City Council -- before signing off on any Sedgwick County gaming."
